1 Tonne Challenge Highlights FaCS Staff Generosity

22/07/2004

The Department of Family and Community Services (FaCSIA) Secretary, Mark Sullivan, today handed over about 1500 kilograms in non-perishable goods to local charities as part of FaCSIA National Office Mid Winter 1 Tonne Challenge.

'We set a target of one tonne, so the response from FaCSIA staff to the challenge has been overwhelming with staff generously donating a large number of goods ranging from cans of baked beans, to blankets and toothpaste,' Mr Sullivan said.

'Staff from the department donated over 1200 kilograms while the Attorney-General's Department and the Australian Greenhouse Office who joined FaCSIA in the challenge donated 230 kilograms in goods.

'I would like to thank all local business houses for their support, particularly the ACT Milkos Association who donated $1000 to the challenge, which was used to purchase 43 blankets, doonas and doona covers.

'It's important, especially at this cold time of year, that we all remember those who are in need of extra assistance.

'The collection of donations for the Mid Winter 1 Tonne Challenge will be donated to local organisations in the Canberra region that provide service and support to our community members in need of extra help.'

All goods donated by staff will be distributed to Anglicare, the Salvation Army, Catholic Welfare Australia and St Vincent de Paul.

'The success of the Mid Winter 1 Tonne Challenge demonstrates the department's community spirit in providing the basic essentials to Canberra's most disadvantaged people,' Mr Sullivan said.
