Salary
Your starting salary will be $51,158 - $55,553 with a 15.4 per cent employer superannuation contribution and an annual $300 good health promotion payment.
Please note that FaHCSIA is in negotiations for a new FaHCSIA Enterprise Agreement which may increase annual salary.
Relocation assistance
You will be able to access limited relocation assistance if you join FaHCSIA from outside the ACT.
Training and development
We provide comprehensive internal and external training and development activities. FaHCSIA Graduates complete Diploma of Government training through CIT Solutions.
The Diploma of Government meets the needs of learning and development of first year Graduate placements within the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.
It is designed to build on your undergraduate degree and articulate your degree qualification into the Australian Public Service work environment.
The Diploma covers many topics including:
- working effectively in the Australian Public Service
- project management
- professional writing in the Public Service
- data and analysis.
Graduates are also offered networking opportunities with senior executives and buddying with former graduate program participants.

2013 Streams
Data and Analysis
The Data and Analysis stream enables graduates with numeric and analytical skills to work on strategic social policy initiatives and programs.
Graduates in this stream will have the opportunity to integrate skills developed in university with on-the-job learning to assist in robust social policy development and advice through activities such as:
- analysing data from administrative sources and surveys
- modelling policy options using spreadsheets
Interested graduates would also have the opportunity to apply and develop more advanced quantitative skills, such as:
- building and using more complex models
- undertaking quantitative research using large data sets.
This work is an essential element of policy development in areas such as income support and family assistance, and their interactions with tax, housing and other policies.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for people who are comfortable working with numbers, enjoy problem solving and have an ability to pay attention to detail, think strategically and see the big picture.
This stream is suited to graduates from diverse educational backgrounds, who are motivated to use their skills to contribute to better social policy outcomes from income support, family payments, housing and related programs.
Graduates with quantitative and data skills are strongly encouraged to apply to this stream. In this stream, you will complete two five-month rotations, during which you will receive on-the-job development and meaningful work.
Finance
FaHCSIA manages approximately one-quarter of the Federal Budget outlays, administering programs totaling more than $70 billion per year.
As a graduate in the finance stream, you will be offered work in the Business and Financial Services Group, where you could work on tasks such as:
- financial reporting, planning and analysis
- taxation
- financial policy and governance
- financial systems
- asset management
- accounts payable and accounts receivable
- appropriations and cash management
- Budget estimates, modelling, costing and strategy
- performance management, business improvement and network support.
FaHCSIA, along with other large Government agencies, uses SAP as its financial management information system. Staff are trained in the use of the core elements of SAP and where appropriate in associated SAP modules such as, Asset Management and Budget Allocation Tools.
All finance stream graduate positions are based in Canberra and FaHCSIA strongly encourages applications from diverse backgrounds, and in particular, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates and people with disability.

Information Technology
If you are an ICT Graduate seeking a position with FaHCSIA apply through the Australian Government ICT Graduate Program. Graduates will complete a graduate development program including networking and professional development opportunities across Government and within the ICT industry. Applications open on 22 March 2012 and close on 3 May 2012.
FaHCSIA’s ICT environment provides a range of critical infrastructure and application technologies to support the policy development, program and service delivery business of the Department, including:

FaHCSIA is looking for enthusiastic IT graduates who can think laterally and innovatively to contribute to developing solutions in key technology and IT process areas for the Department, including:

- Evolution of solution architecture and design approaches
