If a job seeker has a work experience requirement they may choose to relocate. Relocation to an area of higher labour demand, followed by 14 weeks of intensive job search, enables a job seeker to meet their annual work experience activity requirement. After completing this activity the job seeker would need to continue to meet with their JSA provider on a bi-monthly basis and generally be required to continue to undertake job search.
After a job seeker has relocated to an area of better job prospects they will be required to undertake 14 weeks of intensive job search. Intensive job search means twice the usual job contacts with a minimum of 10 per fortnight (however, the maximum is 6 per fortnight for principal carer parents (1.1.P.412) and job seekers assessed as having a partial capacity to work (1.1.P.56)).
Job seekers must discuss the option of relocation with their employment services provider AND have sought prior approval from Centrelink. Centrelink can undertake an assessment to be sure that the area the person wants to move to is actually an area of better job prospects.
If a job seeker moves to an area of lower employment prospects they can be subject to a 26 week payment exclusion period. This is known as MALEP.
