The FaHCSIA Disability Action Plan 2006-2009 - PDF [110kb] | RTF [288kb] sets out what actions FaHCSIA will take as an employer, policy adviser and purchaser to improve access and opportunities for people with disabilities.Who
People with disabilities are key stakeholders in this plan. This includes FaHCSIA employees with disabilities and people with disabilities who access our services or who want to deliver goods and/or services to FaHCSIA.Why
The Commonwealth Disability Strategy (CDS) calls for Commonwealth departments and agencies to make sure people with disabilities have the same level of access to all mainstream Commonwealth policies, programs and services as other Australians. The CDS sets out performance requirements for each of the five core business roles; policy adviser, regulator, purchaser, provider and employer. These make up the CDS Performance Reporting Framework. From 2000-01, all Commonwealth departments and agencies measure their performance and report against the CDS Performance Reporting Framework in their annual reports.
The FaHCSIA Disability Action Plan is a tool designed to help FaHCSIA meet its obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the CDS. It is underpinned by a genuine commitment to the principle that equal access to opportunities for people with disabilities is a right, not a privilege.
How
In 2001, FaCS assessed how it was going against the CDS performance indicators. While we were doing many of the recommended activities, we didn't have procedures in place to make sure that these activities occurred across FaCS and that they were consistently recorded. The FaHCSIA Disability Action Plan 2006-2009 aims to make considering the access needs of people with a disability part of how we do all our business. Actions focus on recording and reporting what we are doing through existing business processes. This will prompt staff to ensure the needs of people with disabilities and their carers are considered.
