Funding Allocation $5.638 billion

National Building Economic Stimulus Plan website

Funding has been allocated to state and territory governments on a per capita basis which was subject to each jurisdiction submitting proposals that met the requirements of the Initiative.  The state and territory governments are responsible for the delivery of the Initiative through their public housing agencies.

New Construction

The funding was made available in two stages:

Stage 1

  • Funding of $692 million was approved in 2008-09 and 2009-10 for building projects that were already in the development pipeline and were brought forward.
  • Over 2,800 dwellings were approved for construction under Stage 1, which substantially exceeds the 2,300 dwelling target.

Stage 2

  • Funding of $4.546 billion has been approved in 2009-10 to 2011-12 for the construction of over 16,500 new social housing dwellings.

A total of over 19,300 new dwellings will be built under Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the New Construction element. The Economic Stimulus Plan website provides an update on progress of these dwellings.

Repairs and maintenance

  • Funding of $400 million was approved in 2008-09 and 2009-10 to support the repair and maintenance of approximately 80,000 existing social housing dwellings.
  • This included approximately 12,000 that were either unsuitable for occupancy or would become unsuitable over the next two years without this funding.
  • All projects are now complete.
